Social Networking – It’s not a waste of time
You always thought that Orkut users had no other work than doing baseless scraps. Do you hate replying to those baseless and plastic scraps forwarded by your friends? Do you want to use Orkut to some positive effect? If so go ahead, read on. These tips can be used on any social networking sites too, but I have written them just with Orkut in my mind.
1) Improve your knowledge by participating in active discussions on Orkut forums. Just join the communities which match your interests & contribute in its forum. This will not only help you in gaining knowledge but will also give you an opportunity to share yours with other fellow member’s.
2) Orkut can help you bring visitors and thereby increase the traffic to your site or blog. Just put your site’s URL into the website field of your profile. You can also input it in other fields like about me, your profiles shout out etc. This will help to increase your blog/site popularity.
3) If you are looking for storing your digital images, then you can take advantage of Orkut albums. If you want the images to be hidden from other members, you can do so via privacy settings of Orkut. This will come useful if you just want to upload a few pics (Not for the purpose of sharing, just for yourself) & don’t want to create an account on image hosting site’s like Picasa web, Imageshack etc.
4) You can get a date or life partner here on orkut. Surprised?? No, it’s true. There has been an increase in online relations on orkut and other social networking sites. I personally know some people who have met each other on orkut and some have married their orkut partner. Most of the times single people can be easily identified amongst the crowd by some peculiar qualities of their profiles. Go befriend them & look out if any sparks strike out between two of you. If it does, then there you go, enjoy & if it doesn’t no problem, you at least got a good friend. But do meet him/her personally before deciding about any feasible relation between two of you. Don’t get carried away from his/her’s online profile and the scraps he/she make you.
5) Orkut applications can be of help to kill boredom. When you have a work break & want to refresh yourself , play some little quizzes and games. They will rejuvenate you & help you concentrate more into your work. Then there are apps which let you send free sms to your friends. This will help you prevent to keep down your mobile bills.
6) Orkut can be used to gather like minded people & form a group (Offline). Just search for people with similar interest in your local area & then you can start your own Rock band or maybe a group of FOSS lover’s. Once you leave the online world and start interacting with them in real world, then you will be feel thankful of joining orkut. Though I personally still haven’t got a big success here, but I have developed a few special bonds.
Though these are just a few ways to use Orkut to good effect, I am trying to find out more. If you have any creative idea let me know in comments, I will add it in this list.

I wrote this article as I am seeing an increase in chatterboxes on orkut, forwarding chain messages via send to all and other crap stuff.
Hope someone implements some of the above tips.
Actually, many of the ‘job offers’ regarding PHP and MySQL come from orkut. Thats a different thing that I don’t take any of those as they are just not worth it.
